Dr. Briers holds a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Leuven, Belgium. After teaching chemistry and physics, he served as head of biochemistry at the Central Medical Laboratory in Antwerp, and as head of scientific services for bioMérieux. In 1982 he founded ECO-BIO, an in vitro diagnostics company specializing in microbiology and immunology. Dr. Briers developed a product for the detection of Aspergillus antigens (galactomannan) which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

In 1990, Dr. Briers founded Beta-Ventures, which published Focus Diagnostica Magazine, organized accredited continued education for clinical pathologists, and consulted with national in vitro diagnostic companies and European patient organizations.

Doctor Briers’ strong social involvement with patient organizations began after his own prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. He joined the Belgian patient support group “Us Too Belgium” and is one of the founders of EUROPA UOMO, the European Prostate Cancer Coalition.

He also served as executive director of the European Cancer Patient Coalition and as executive director ad interim of the European Platform for Patient Organisations Science and Industry, a multi-stakeholder think tank in health policy-making in 2014.
